WORST CYCLONE IN 20 YEARS

On 3rd May, 2019, 14 districts of Odisha were hit by Cyclone 'FANI'. With 175-185 Kmph wind speed and heavy rainfall, this was the worst cyclone Odisha had witnessed in the past 20 years. In anticipation of its landfall, over 12 million people were evacuated and relocated to relief camps. Due to the cyclone, 89 persons lost their lives and over 15 million people were severely affected. The total damage caused in Odisha was estimated at Rs. 120 million. The state capital Bhubaneswar, its airport, the temple town of Puri and Cuttack experienced power breakdowns for several days. The cyclone caused severe damage to road and power infrastructure; damage to over 5 lac houses; significant loss to livelihoods of fishing and agricultural communities; and uprooted thousands of trees. As per the reports, as many as 5,244 primary schools, 547 secondary schools, 107 residential schools and 180 higher education institutions were also damaged.

Care Today Fund is galvanizing support from all concerned citizens to reach-out to the cyclone-affected communities in a meaningful way and sincerely appeals for your donation.

Our efforts

Care Today Fund has initiated following projects to rebuild the lives of the affected communities.

  • A project to repair 161 household toilets was successfully completed that were extensively damaged due to cyclone 'Fani' in the villages of Berhampur (67) and Khatisahi (94) around the Chilka Lagoon area in Krushnaprasad Block of Puri district, Odisha. The beneficiaries were poor and underprivileged marginal fishing community. The repair works have ensured effective use of household toilets, keeping the environment clean, healthy and open defecation free.
  • Currently, a project is being implemented to rebuild 15 low cost houses, each measuring 18ft x 12ft with tin-roofs, for vulnerable women in Berhampur village of the Chilika Lagoon area, Puri District, Odisha. They were earlier living in thatched and tin roofed houses, which were severely damaged due to cyclone ‘Fani’. The reconstruction work will ensure a safe and culturally appropriate house for the vulnerable women.
