CARE TODAY A/C ACID ATTACK SURVIVORS FUND
Reaching out to support and rehabilitate acid attacks survivors

Acid attack in India has stunned our consciences repeatedly with maimed countenances, unbeaten survivors and families driven to insolvency supporting their recovery costs. It is the worst infliction on a human being, leading to complete debilitation; loss of income and opportunity; as well as social alienation. Acid attack survivors endure immense trauma and are unable to lead a normal life – often blinded, scarred beyond recognition and robbed of their identity.

Acid attack cases are increasing every year. Formally reported cases have increased from 83 in 2011 to 349 in 2015, while it is believed that there are many which are not reported. The victims mostly have been women between the ages of 14 and 35, and attacks often occur as revenge for rejecting a marriage proposal or sexual advances; for socially unacceptable and frivolous reasons such as not bringing enough dowries; blaming a girl child, etc.

Our efforts

acid attack

Since 2013, Care Today Fund has been supporting Ms. Tuba Tabassum, an acid attack survivor from Sivan in Bihar for her medical treatment and education. She was also supported by Care Today Fund to undergo her coaching from a renowned institute to appear for the medical entrance examination in the academic year 2016-17. We acknowledge that like Tuba there are hundreds of acid attack survivors in the country hoping for sustainable solutions to their endless suffering.

In June, 2017, Care Today Fund launched the Care Today A/c Acid Attack Survivors Fund project to continue supporting acid attack survivors, especially to create a sustainable environment for them.

In August, 2018, Care Today Fund entered into a partnership with NGO ActionAid Association, an associate of UK based ActionAid, an internationally reputed NGO, in order to establish a Café in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, which will be fully run and managed by acid attack survivors.

On 14th February, 2020, “The Orange Café & Restaurant” was inaugurated in Varanasi by Ms. Mridula Jaiswal, the Mayor of Varanasi. The café is strategically located close to Tulsi Manas Mandi, Banaras Hindu University and IIT BHU. Currently, five survivors are running and managing the café and plans to provide livelihood support for few more in near future. Care Today wishes the Acid Attack survivors who started the restaurant best of luck and hope the restaurant flourishes while treating the guests with delicious food.

Appeal: Care Today would like to sustain this journey to support Acid Attack survivors and appeals to the donors to contribute generously to start more such efforts in the future. Your donations will help Care Today to support more survivors for medical treatments, education and socio-economic rehabilitation, life-skill trainings and providing sustainable livelihood opportunities.
